In my kitchen- elderberry syrup
I become a fanatic toward the end of July when the elderberries are ripening. I start scouting when they bloom in spring, and then watch carefully as the heavy heads begin to turn luscious purple and droop with the weight of the berries.
Elderberry (Sambucus) is a powerful antioxidant and immune system booster, and they grow wild all over the Wisconsin woods and fields. It's a simple trip to make your own tonic to keep you in peak health through the winter. I have a bottle of syrup in the refrigerator and my favorite way to enjoy it is with a tablespoon in a glass of seltzer water with a splash of lemon or lime.
